Welcome To Helston Railway

The most southerly railway in the UK

Steam and Diesel Train Rides – Scenic Views – Good Food.

The Helston Railway Preservation Society was the result, back in 2002 of a vision by a small number of enthusiasts to re-open a section of the Helston branch line. We now have a fully functioning standard gauge heritage railway.

We welcome dogs to all areas of Helston Railway, including in certain areas of our buffet carriages and on the trains to and fro from Prospidnick.

We are currently running train rides on Thursdays and Sundays.

Helston Railway
We are telling the story of Peckett 2000 up to the time it arrived at the Helston Railway, as the resident working steam locomotive. This week, it is the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford near Peterborough.Peckett 2000's time in industrial service ended at British Sugar at Ipswich in the early 1970's and there is a small dark age where no one seems to know exactly what happened. If you have more information then we would love to hear from you. What we do know is that Peckett 2000 eventually moved to the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford and we have a couple of photos whilst it was based there. Looking around the internet, there seem very few images of the locomotive at the Nene Valley Railway. If you have any, then please get in touch. The first photo is Peckett 2000 in action in around 1978 and the second is around the same time at Wansford shed. ... See MoreSee Less

Helston Railway
We are publishing a series of short articles about our steam locomotive Peckett 2000. We were going to move on today to its life after working for British Sugar, but some more photos have come to light of the locomotive at the Sproughton sugar beet factory at Ipswich. The locomotive was sold by British Sugar to a gentleman called Peter Elms in 1971, and the loco, we understand, stayed in Ipswich until 1977. We owe a big debt of thanks to Peter Elms for saving the locomotive from the scrapman's torch.During the open day for the families of those working at Sproughton, Peckett 2000 did runs up and down the sugar company line. It looks like a photo of "how many people can you cram onto the footplate of a Peckett". A lot, it seems.Peckett 2000 is seen outside its shed on 6 April 1963, having been polished up. The final photo is a shot of a more mundane day of poddling about. You know those days - nothing really planned - let's see what happens. As you can see, the locomotive is work stained and in need of a bit of tlc.Peckett 2000 is a B3 class, and only 13 were built by Peckett & Sons between 1933 and 1954, and all went to UK customers. The loco had been back to Peckett & Sons in 1955 for an overhaul and we believe that was its only return visit to its birthplace in Bristol except when it passed on a low loader in 2021, on its way to Helston. If you would like to see more of Peckett 2000 working at Ipswich, then have a look at this video on YouTube: youtu.be/FnrHAEFiCSA?si=MFYdfXylg9_fGmghWe're sure Peckett 2000 would love to be part of the extension of the Helston Railway further towards Helston itself. If you can help the campaign with a donation, then we would really appreciate it. Go to www.helstonrailway.co.uk/donate ... See MoreSee Less
